"The Waving Girl"
This piece is a modern depiction of an old Savannah tale.
In 1887, an 18 year old girl fell in love with a Navy lieutenant. As his ship left port, he vowed to some day return and gave her his handkerchief as a token of his love. She waved it at each ship that passed by her, on Elba Island, and continued to do so for 44 years. Florence Martus became a sailor's legend: "The Waving Girl."
The size shown is 24 x 36. It is also offered in smaller sizes, both on canvas and watercolor paper.
